Why is it impossible? Well, there is no meat. AT ALL. Yet, it still tastes and looks like a medium rare beef burger.  By no means, am I a vegetarian nor a vegan.  I love to bite into a delicious cow every once in a while. What is so amazing and different about a meatless burger? Well, let me tell you.

I recently went to Bareburger in Plainview, New York.  Bareburger has always sparked my fancy by serving non-traditional burgers.  From ostrich meat to elk, boar, and of course your regular ol’ cow.  Yes, I said ostrich meat, but that’s for another day to talk about.  I went with the intention of getting my usual delicious elk burger with avocado, grilled onions, and Bareburgers’ “special sauce”.  I saw a pamphlet on the table that was advertising this new “Impossible Burger”.  How can a burger be impossible? Is it fake? Is it just a figment of your imagination? Okay, Maybe I was thinking too much about it.  I had seen Vice segments about scientists developing lab-grown meat, but it doesn’t exactly sound appealing or safe for that matter.

Before I freak out anyone thinking this meat is lab grown… it is and it isn’t.  According to the team at Impossible Foods, the meatless burger is actually plant-based.  Plant-based? It may sound crazy; well actually it is pretty crazy.  But it’s real and it is delicious.  But I have already established that.  Back to the burger, the burger is made of wheat, potato protein, fat from coconut oil, and heme.  Heme, not hemp.  Heme is actually found in all living things.

” Heme is an iron-containing molecule in blood that carries oxygen. It’s heme that makes your blood red and makes meat look pink and taste slightly metallic.”  Read More

I could write for days about heme, it is easier to just read about it with a simple google search.

This post isn’t about heme, it is about Bareburger doing this special collaboration with Impossible Foods.  So I get the burger, and it looks and smells like red meat.  If someone had ordered me food without telling me.  I honestly wouldn’t bat an eye.  It also helps that Bareburger knows what ingredients work best on a burger to make it as delicious as possible.

The beautiful burger in all its glory.  A picture doesn’t do it nearly enough justice.  I take one bite of this epic creation, and I am very happy that I went out of my comfort zone, and got this burger. It legit has that bloody looking juice coming out of it. I probably finished the burger in about 7 minutes.  I wish I had ordered another one just to relive the experience again.

Would I recommend this burger? Abso$#&@lutely!  Life is about having fun and trying new things.  There are now 7.3 billion people on this blue marble, and counting.  We are going to need to start looking at alternative methods of eating foods.  Believe it or not, grasshoppers are starting to make their way into New York City.  They are a great source of protein, and inexpensive to produce. Well, I hope you enjoyed my first official life experience post.  I look forward to hearing from you, and continuing to try new and exciting things!

See you next time!
